Rocking Horses
Rock'n ... but not Roll'n!
While the styles have changed over the years, the appeal of rocking horses to children hasn't diminished. The availability of rocking horses has changed in the past 20 years, and the artisan, hand-crafted horses have become less easily sourced. But so too has the price evolved, and rocking horses can now be owned for far less investment.
We keep a small collection of rocking horses in our village store, some visible here which can be posted to our customers who're unable to visit us. We focus on modular designs that can accommodate tiny toddlers, then grow to suit kids as they can walk and climb on themselves.
Rocking horses have a long history, dating back centuries to ancient times when wheeled toys rocked back and forth. The familiar wooden rocking horse we know today emerged in 17th-century Europe. These finely crafted horses, often with intricate carvings, became beloved playthings for aristocratic children in the 18th and 19th centuries. With the Industrial Revolution, manufacturing techniques improved, making rocking horses safer, lighter, and more accessible.
What is the history of rocking horses?
Over time, rocking horses have evolved to reflect changing fashions and technological advancements. They have taken on many styles, from a cowboy’s steed to an ornate carousel horse, a fluffy pink unicorn, and even an ultra-minimalist modern design. This variety showcases the toy's ability to adapt while maintaining its timeless appeal.
Rocking horses offer several developmental benefits for children including:
- Gross Motor Skills: They help children develop coordination and balance. The rhythmic motion requires them to use their core muscles, improving their stability and motor control.
- Spatial Awareness: As children rock back and forth, they develop their spatial awareness and a subconscious coordination about their body's position in space (proprioception).
- Sensory Integration: The gentle rocking motion can be soothing and help with sensory integration, providing a calming effect.
- Imaginative Play: Rocking horses encourage imaginative play, allowing children to engage in creative scenarios, which fosters cognitive and social development.
