Jumbo have been in the puzzle and toy business in Europe since 1853 as a union between Amsterdam department store owner Engelbert Hausemann, a German, and Wilhelm Hotte. Between WWI and WWII, the elephant "Jumbo" brand was created to represent the strength of their wooden toys as a symbol of quality.

After struggling with the supply of quality cardboard, Jumbo took control and began making their own in 1950. Since 1967, Jumbo was big enough to cease importing and concentrate solely on their own products with special commissions from artsits worldwide.
